It’s not often that we run with a few thousand other folks. Actually, it’s hardly ever. That’s what makes races so much fun; the closed streets and sound of shoes trotting down the pavement. It was our first 10K race, the morning of Super Bowl Sunday.
There is no better excuse for eating anything and everything you want during the game than knowing you ran 6.2 miles before most people had their morning coffee.
The race started and ended at CSU Sacramento. Mile markers were easy to spot and the two water stations meant this was my first run in quite some time without a water bottle in hand. Thank goodness for that, too.
Being the first 10K for both of us, I only had a rough goal time in mind. I knew I’d run a faster pace than normal and had the strength to push things a bit. The time as I crossed the finish was the best surprise of the day. Even better was knowing my chip time would take almost a minute off the clock time.
We got our chips clipped off our shoes, walked by the booths after the finish and headed to my car for some water and stretching. With one foot resting on the rear bumper, I looked out over the rest of the runners coming in. It’s great to see so many other people outside, being active and happy and hopefully accomplishing their goals. We got ours. In 58:49.9, I became a 10K veteran.
